Dubai: Govinda has drawn a line under the speculation surrounding his private life, and he has put a number on it.

The actor and former Member of Parliament has issued a public notice warning against false and unverified reports about his personal and family affairs, stating that legal action will follow and that damages of up to Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) may be sought from those responsible.

The notice was issued after rumours of a court marriage began circulating on social media.

What the notice covers

The warning is addressed broadly, to individuals, media organisations, digital platforms and content creators alike. It cautions against creating, publishing, uploading, broadcasting or sharing material that is false, defamatory, malicious, fabricated or unverified.

Where it gets specific is on the technology.

The notice flags the circulation of photographs, videos, audio recordings, morphed images, deepfakes and other synthetic content produced using artificial intelligence. No permission has been granted, it states, for anyone to create, manipulate or use Govinda's voice, photographs, identity, likeness or material relating to his private and family life through AI or any other digital tool.

The action he could take

According to details shared by the actor's team, Govinda may pursue both civil and criminal action, on grounds including defamation, invasion of privacy, misuse of identity and cybercrime. The notice cites provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, and the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The remedies listed are not minor. Against anyone found responsible, the actor may seek court orders touching bank accounts, restrictions on buying or selling property, seizure of passports and other measures. Action has also been sought against social media platforms and accounts accused of deliberately spreading misleading content.

The notice states Govinda's belief that the rumours may be part of a planned effort to damage his reputation, and that the intent behind them is to cause him mental and social harm. Reports of an alleged divorce had circulated earlier and were subsequently dismissed as untrue.

What prompted it

The warning arrives days after a significant development in the actor's marriage.

On 19 August, Govinda's manager Shashi Sinha confirmed that Sunita Ahuja had withdrawn her divorce petition at Mumbai's Bandra Family Court, closing a matter that had been open for two years.

"It has been going on for two years, but it's finally over now. Today, Sunita Ji submitted a petition for withdrawal at the family court in Bandra," Sinha told ANI.

Govinda's own response, by his manager's account, was consistent with how he had handled the entire case. "Govinda has been neutral since the start of the case. Today, also, he remains the same," Sinha said.

Ahuja was photographed at the court with the couple's son, Yashvardhan Ahuja. Asked by waiting photographers what had brought her there, she offered a one-line deflection.

"Birthday manane aaye hai (I came to celebrate a birthday)," she said.

The video that came before

Govinda had earlier posted a video asking his wife to hold back on statements he felt could affect his reputation, his career and his standing in the industry.

"When you were doing your own work, whether it was a food show or Lock Upp, you asked Tina (their daughter) to do both the shows. You made me do this. Anyway, that is your right," he said in it.

He also mentioned that he had started work on a new film and did not want anything to undo the goodwill built with audiences over decades.

Work, and a family debut

That film is Roopa, which pairs Govinda with debutante R Swarnakar.

His son Yashvardhan makes his Bollywood debut in Hero Ki Horrorine, due in cinemas on 7 January 2027. Directed by Sajid Khan and produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R. Kapoor and Amar Butala, the cast also includes Nitanshi Goel, Jamie Lever, Chunky Pandey, Brijendra Kala and Simrat Kaur Randhawa.

Sunita Ahuja is in it too, playing her own son's mother, and she thinks that may be a first.

"Main Yash ke saath picture kar rahi hoon. Main Ektaa Kapoor ko bahut pyaar karti hoon. Unki wajah se maine Netflix ka show kiya, aur main unse bahut pyaar karti hoon. Woh bhi mujhe bahut pyaar karti hain. Yash ki picture mein main uski maa ka hi role kar rahi hoon... Shayad industry mein pehli baar aisa hoga ki maa aur beta ek saath launch ho rahe hain (I'm working on a film with Yash. I have immense love and respect for Ektaa Kapoor. It was because of her that I did a Netflix show, and we share a wonderful bond. In Yash's film, I'm playing his mother. Perhaps it's the first time in the industry that a mother and son are being launched together)," she said.
