Someone famous said that it is not the cost of the gift that counts but the thought. I could not agree more. Just when we thought we had seen all the possible permutations and combinations of graphing a love story on the big screen, we come across a flick such as Jaane Tu ... Ya Jaane Na – a daringly simple love story that is gift-wrapped just right, with the perfect thought behind it.
The story is so simple that it seems a trifle silly to recap. Boy meets girl, but both go separate ways only to get back together when they realise they are in love. You certainly don't need Einstein to figure this out.
The film did not tread the size-zero or bikini path to draw the masses, there were no robots or friendly aliens, no dare-devil action scenes to keep you gaping in wonder or even an item number. But it's the way the story has been crafted and the general ingredient of joy and goodness in every frame that made us sit up and enjoy this often repeated love tale.
The casting is nothing short of a coup. Fresh faces brought in their unbridled interpretation of scenes in a tale told in delectable suspense that charms us to a great extent.
Imran Khan as mama's boy infuses the screen with a freshness and déjà vu reminiscent of a young Aamir Khan .The veterans have not let us down either. Husband-wife duo, played by Naseeruddin and Ratna Pathak Shah, are the picture of domicile tolerance as the warrior Rathore, a hero to the world, still remains a henpecked husband at his core. Paresh Rawal continues to entertain, proving he is the numero uno when it comes to comic timing and mad-man antics.
As an RJ, I have to make a mention of the pulsating soundtrack. Pappu Can't Dance already has party-goers moving in synchronised steps. Khabi Khabi Aditi, sung by Rashid Ali, another new entrant, is as delightful a treat as freshly baked bread.
