I had two errors in judgement last week. One was to watch Ugly Aur Pagli and the second was to take female friends along. I had only Mallika Sherawat's previous Pyaar Ke Side Effects for reference and she did a fairly good job then as a runaway bride.
This time round, Sherawat's Ugly Aur Pagli was screened to audiences in select theatres only and I'd say the decision was a good one. This is one vapid movie that will just whisk past us faster than any runaway bride. Starring Ranvir Shorey and Sherawat, the movie is astonishingly devoid of any subplots, unlike the usual Bollywood storylines, and that explains the paucity of other actors. And what happens between the lead pair in the first 5 minutes of the film is repeated for the next hour and a half, with a tad more eccentricity than the preceding scenes.
Then suddenly there's a rush for an actual story almost towards the movie's end (as if the director had an epiphany that a movie does need a story after all).
Apparently, the film is a rip-off of a Korean movie. But what really lifted the lid off for me was seeing Anu Malik's first name spelt as "Aanuu" in the credits. The man is astrologically-motivated of course, but one wishes that the change would transpire to his music, particularly his vocal histrionics which feature in the audio CD of Talli Ho Gayee ... Thankfully, it's Mika's version that figures in the movie soundtrack, which also introduces Malik's daughter Anmol Malik.
So if you have nothing better to do on the weekend, watching this film could be your option. However, try to shake the girls off from accompanying you on this one. The film does contain some man-unfriendly content (read slaps and punches) that Ranvir has to suffer at the hands of his lady love. And suprisingly, all he does is take it with a loving look in his eyes. So don't tell me I didn't warn you when the women-folk turn to look at the males in the theatre with that 'oh-why-can't you-be-like-him' look.
