Last seen as Captain America in 'Avengers: Endgame', the actor insists he is now retired
Dubai: Don’t you love it when a much-loved actor who has parted ways with his famous superhero roles (yes, there could be more than one) pops up unexpectedly on screen in a familiar costume?
Like Chris Evans making a surprise cameo as Fantastic Four’s Johnny Storm/Human Torch in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, a role he reprised after 17 years. “Playing Johnny again was a dream come true and he’ll always have a special place in my heart,” he wrote on his Instagram story last year, thanking Ryan Reynolds and others for the opportunity.
While Evans did make an impact as Johnny Storm/Human Torch in the Fantastic Four films, his superhero journey had only just begun. Destined to become one of Marvel’s most iconic champions, Captain America, on screen, Evans portrayed the coveted role from 2011 to 2019, when he handed over his famous shield to Sam Wilson/Falcon (Anthony Mackie) in Avengers: Endgame.
Despite Evans’ confirmation of his retirement as Steve Rogers/Captain America, fans couldn’t help hoping for an encore.
Sadly, news that Evans could perhaps return in a new Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Avengers: Doomsday, has now been debunked by the actor himself.
Speaking to Esquire magazine, he said, “That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years - ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it. Yeah, no - happily retired!”
There have been instances of actors hotly insisting they will not revisit a particular role, only for fans to jump out of their seats when they’re placidly munching popcorn in a cinema. Like when The Amazing Spider-Man’s Andrew Garfield turns up in Spider-Man: No Way Home, after denying reports that said he would.
Fans who were looking forward to Chris Evans returning to the MCU can only wait and hope.
Avengers: Doomsday, directed by the Russo brothers, is scheduled to release in May 2026.
