Veteran actor and filmmaker Aamir Khan has hinted that his long-cherished dream project — a cinematic adaptation of the ancient Indian saga — could be the final film of his legendary career.

Speaking in a recent podcast with content creator Raj Shamani, the 60-year-old star opened up about the emotional and creative weight of the epic, suggesting it may leave him with nothing else left to accomplish in cinema.

'Nothing ‘left after this'

Calling the Mahabharat the ultimate storytelling challenge, Khan spoke about the project's scale, complexity, and emotional depth. “It’s layered, it has emotion, it has scale — everything you find in the world, you will find in Mahabharat,” he said. “Maybe after doing this, I will feel that I have nothing left to do.”

Khan emphasised that this isn’t just another film for him — it’s the culmination of decades of passion. “I hope I die with my shoes on,” he added, echoing the sentiment that he wants to keep creating until the very end, but also acknowledging that Mahabharat might be his swan song.

One film won’t be enough

Khan has long spoken about his ambition to bring Ved Vyas’ ancient epic to the screen. In an earlier interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he admitted that a single movie wouldn’t be enough to do justice to the massive narrative.

“It will be multiple films. I am looking at a large scale,” he said. He also noted the need for multiple directors to bring the complex saga to life within a feasible timeline.

High stakes and fan frenzy

The news has sent a wave of excitement through fans and industry insiders alike. Given Khan’s track record for taking on bold and transformative projects, Mahabharat could be a defining moment not only in his career but in Indian cinema itself.

Upcoming projects

Before diving into Mahabharat, Khan is set to return to screens with the sports drama Sitaare Zaameen Par, releasing on June 20, 2025.

He’s also co-starring with Rajinikanth in Coolie, directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, and producing the period drama Lahore 1947, featuring Sunny Deol and helmed by Rajkumar Santoshi.

If Mahabharat does become his final film, Aamir Khan looks poised to leave on a historic high.
