'Hera Pheri 3' row: Paresh Rawal exits over Rs150 million fee clause, returns Rs1.1 million to Akshay Kumar

Veteran actor Paresh Rawal has officially exited 'Hera Pheri 3', sparking controversy and a legal row with Akshay Kumar’s Cape of Good Films. The fallout has left fans and the film industry questioning the future of the beloved comedy franchise.

According to Bollywood Hungama, Rawal returned the Rs1.1 million (Rs11 lakh) signing fee he had received for the film, along with 15% annual interest and an additional amount—formally ending his involvement with the much-anticipated sequel.

“No creative differences,” says Rawal

Rawal confirmed his exit on May 18 via X (formerly Twitter), clarifying that it was not due to any “creative differences” with director Priyadarshan. “I hold immense love, respect, and faith in Mr. Priyadarshan,” he stated, dismissing rumours of discord.

Despite Rawal’s clarification, media reports indicate that Cape of Good Films has filed a Rs250 million (Rs25 crore) lawsuit against him, accusing the veteran actor of breaching his contract and exhibiting unprofessional conduct.

Rawal’s camp disputes allegations

A source close to Rawal, quoted by IANS, defended the actor, stating that only a promo shoot had taken place and that there was no formal film schedule. The source also said Rawal had informed key team members, including Akshay Kumar, of his decision to exit. “Calling a veteran like Paresh Rawal unprofessional is unfair,” the source added.

Dispute over payment terms

Sources from the production side allege that Rawal had demanded additional compensation despite already receiving a higher-than-usual fee. His contract stipulated a total fee of Rs150 million (Rs15 crore), with Rs148.9 million (Rs14.89 crore) to be paid after the film’s release, tentatively scheduled for 2026 or 2027.

To add to the confusion, director Priyadarshan and co-star Suniel Shetty have reportedly said they were unaware of Rawal’s departure, despite the actor claiming he had communicated his decision.

Only a promotional shoot has been completed for Hera Pheri 3, using the crew of another film, Bhooth Bangla. Rawal’s departure—after his iconic portrayal of Baburao in the first two films—has cast doubt over the direction and success of the long-awaited third installment.
