Verdict: Stream it. This offbeat after-life romance is one of the most refreshing K-dramas
Netflix’s Heavenly Ever After is a rare gem in the K-drama lineup—quirky, heartfelt, and quietly profound.
The series stars veteran actress Kim Hye-ja as Lee Hae-sook, an 80-year-old former loan shark who has lived a tough life but remained fiercely devoted to her paraplegic husband, Nak-jun. A
After his peaceful death, Hae-sook, heartbroken but determined, chooses to join him in the afterlife.
But Heaven doesn’t exactly play fair
Upon arrival, Hae-sook discovers she can pick the age at which she wants to spend eternity. In a touching nod to her husband’s final compliment, she opts to remain 80—because he once told her she’d never been more beautiful. But her reunion takes a surreal turn when Nak-jun (now played by Son Suk-ku) appears in the prime of his 30s, having chosen youth for his afterlife. The result is a delightfully awkward, emotionally rich exploration of whether love can truly transcend age, vanity, and time—even in paradise.
The show kicks off with a darkly comic bang: two thugs attempt to shake down a debtor, only to be met by Hae-sook, who coolly scares them off. That scene sets the tone for the series—funny, sharp, and unexpectedly tender. Hae-sook is no pushover, but her layers of warmth and regret unfold beautifully as the story progresses.
According to early reviews, what makes Heavenly Ever After truly shine is its balance of comedy and emotional depth. It never leans too far into sentimentality or slapstick. Instead, it walks the fine line between absurdity and sincerity, much like The Good Place or Forever. The afterlife setting is surreal but grounded in emotion, and Kim Hye-ja is magnetic throughout, bringing heart, humour, and gravitas to every scene.
Visually, the show leans into whimsy with moments that feel slightly theatrical—but that only adds to its charm. Even its use of green screens and CGI feels intentional and endearing rather than cheap.
At its core, Heavenly Ever After is a touching love story wrapped in a fantastical premise. It questions what it means to love someone across lifetimes—and whether the soul recognizes the heart, not the face.
