Bollywood just got the first look at its next mythological showdown. Makers of Mahakali have dropped the official trailer, and fans are busy dissecting the yet-to-be released film.

Following his first-look reveal last week that had social media buzzing, Akshaye Khanna is barely recognisable in his new role — a white beard, tangled locks, and ancient robes transforming him into Shukracharya, the legendary guru of the Asuras. It's a striking pivot for the actor, who recently earned praise for his role in Aditya Dhar's Dhurandhar.

Titled #Shukracharya'sWarCry, the trailer throws viewers straight into a clash between the forces of Dharma and Adharma. Khanna's Shukracharya recounts the ancient banishment of the Asura race to the netherworld, sealed away behind the doors of the 14 realms. Now, driven by vengeance, he sets a 14-day deadline to unleash the Asuras' war cry and win their eternal freedom, even commanding the demon Raktabeej to wipe out humanity along the way. Standing in his path: the unstoppable divine force of Maa Kali herself.

The reaction online has been instant and enthusiastic, with fans praising Khanna's transformation and predicting another hit is on the way, many saying they got goosebumps from the teaser alone.

A growing cinematic universe

Mahakali marks the third installment in the Prasanth Varma Cinematic Universe, which kicked things off in 2024 with Hanu-Man. That Teja Sajja-led Telugu superhero film became a genuine phenomenon, pulling in roughly Rs 295 crore worldwide and smashing box office records along the way. With Jai Hanuman also in the pipeline, the universe continues to expand and Mahakali looks poised to be its most ambitious chapter yet.

Inside Mahakali

Directed by Puja Aparna Kolluru and written by Prasanth Varma, the film centers on Goddess Kali in a Bengal setting, weaving in themes of women's empowerment, courage, and unshakeable faith. It's being mounted on a global scale too, with an IMAX 3D release and plans for international rollout across multiple languages.

Smaran Sai composes the score, and RKD Studios is producing. Alongside Khanna, the cast includes Bhoomi Shetty, Rohit Saraf, Sriya Reddy, Rajat Kapoor, and Nassar. Mahakali is slated to hit theatres on January 8, 2027.

Speaking to TV9 Telugu, Varma described the film as a bold new addition to his cinematic universe, teasing that Kalika Devi's form will confront evil on an unprecedented scale — and promising to redefine what a superhero film can be.
