Would you pay Dh1,949 for a toothbrush with AI, a camera and a water jet?

Dubai: A toothbrush that can see inside your mouth, identify the gaps between your teeth and automatically fire a jet of mouthrinse into them is coming to the UAE this month, but the technology comes with a Dh1,949 price tag.

Dyson unveiled its CameraJet toothbrush on September 1, bringing cameras, machine learning, liquid flossing and app-based feedback into a device designed to combine brushing, flossing and mouth-rinsing in one routine.

The Dyson Dental System will cost Dh1,949 in the UAE and SAR1,949 in Saudi Arabia. The package includes the CameraJet toothbrush, charging dock, travel case, Dyson toothpaste and mouthrinse.

A camera watches while you brush

At the centre of the toothbrush is a 100,000-pixel macro lens camera powered by Dyson's Gap Optical Targeting machine-learning system.

The camera scans 28 live images every second and identifies, tracks and predicts gaps between the user's teeth. Within 100 milliseconds of detecting a gap, the toothbrush can trigger a conical burst of mouthrinse into the space while the user continues brushing.

Dyson said the system runs on 16 million lines of code, while its machine-learning model was trained using 470,000 dental images collected during development.

Live view from inside your mouth

Users can also see what the camera is capturing through the MyDyson app, effectively giving them a live view from inside their mouth while brushing.

The Wi-Fi and Bluetooth-connected toothbrush provides guided cleaning, coverage mapping, brushing and flossing information and personalised feedback through the app. Users can see which areas they have cleaned and where their technique may need improvement.

The camera is activated only during live viewing or when the automatic jet function is being used. Dyson said images are neither recorded nor stored on the toothbrush or in the cloud and remain private to the user.

Users can choose between automatic and manual jetting and adjust the brushing intensity through the app.

Mouthrinse fires directly into the gaps

The CameraJet carries a 12.5ml mouthrinse tank designed to hold enough liquid for one cleaning session.

Dyson developed a broad, cone-shaped jet instead of the narrow stream commonly used by water flossers. The company said the design gives the liquid wider coverage across plaque while operating at lower pressure.

The tank uses a diaphragm pump and pressure chamber designed to keep the jet working when the toothbrush is tilted or held horizontally, including when users are trying to reach the back of their teeth.

Once the toothbrush is returned to its dock, the mouthrinse tank can be refilled at the touch of a button in three seconds, while the same dock charges the device between uses.

Dyson has also redesigned the brush head

The brush head combines firmer inner bristles intended to remove surface stains with softer outer bristles designed for cleaning around the gumline.

Dyson has also introduced variable sonic oscillation, which changes the angle of the brushing movement to keep the bristles moving when they press against harder-to-reach parts of the teeth.

The company said external testing found that the technology removed up to 69% more plaque in hard-to-reach areas compared with market-leading premium electric toothbrushes.

Each brush head also carries an RFID tag that tracks how many cleaning sessions it has completed and alerts the user when it needs to be replaced.

Toothpaste designed so the camera can see

Dyson has developed its own toothpaste and mouthrinse to work with the CameraJet system.

The toothpaste does not contain SLS, a common foaming agent, because excessive foam could obstruct the camera while it is trying to identify gaps. The mouthrinse has also been formulated to produce less foam when fired through the toothbrush's jet.

Both will be available in Ginger Mint and Spearmint flavours, while a Peppermint Sensitive toothpaste will be offered for people with sensitive teeth.

The CameraJet will initially be sold in Ceramic Ultra Blue and Ceramic Pink and will arrive at Dyson Demo Stores and selected retailers across the UAE and Saudi Arabia during September.
