New firm to boost Dubai as sports and culture hub
Dubai: A new event management body has been created in Dubai to manage and organise sports and cultural events in the emirate.
His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, issued a law establishing the Dubai Event Management Corporation.
The law states that the newly set up entity will be a general corporate body that enjoys financial and administrative independence with full legal competence to assume its activities and achieve its objectives.
The corporation, owned by Dubai government, will be based in the emirate, and operate under the authority of the Dubai Ruler.
The law stipulates that the newly-established entity will be the sole authority responsible for representing Dubai in signing sports agreements, except football or equestrian-related deals, as well as for drawing up and setting policies, strategies and standards for sports activities and events.
Under the decision, the new entity is aimed at enhancing Dubai's position as an international hub for sports and cultural events, conferences and exhibitions.
The corporation also aims to attract international companies, organisations, bodies, agencies and clubs and lure international conferences and exhibitions to invest in Dubai.
It is tasked with holding, organising and developing sports and cultural events, exhibitions and conferences in Dubai.
It will be responsible for attracting the best expertise and implementing international standards to develop cultural and sports activities in the emirate.
The new body is also tasked with setting up, organising and investing in sports facilities.
The new law abolishes Decree No. 2 for 1989 on the establishment of the Emirates Golf Authority, Decree No. 13 of 1992 on the creation of Dubai Creek Club and Decree No. 17 of 2001 on setting up Dubai Golf Corporation.
It also abrogates any other provisions that may contradict its provisions.
All staff and movable funds owned by the Emirates Golf Authority, Dubai Creek Club and Dubai Golf Corporation will be transferred to the new corporation.
Profits of golf clubs and courses will go the Dubai corporation.
Shaikh Mohammad also issued a decree appointing Shaikh Ahmad Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum as Chairman of the corporation. He issued another decree appointing Saeed Hussain Al Montafeq as Chief Executive.
The corporation will be run by a six-member board, including the chairman and chief executive. The members will be appointed by a decision to be issued by the Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council.
