‘The Match’ McIlroy and Woods v Thomas and Spieth

Best-ball format proceeds going to Hurricane Ian relief effort

Tomorrow (Saturday) sees Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy taking on Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth in the latest edition of ‘The Match’ at Pelican Golf Club, Florida.

This is the seventh time it has taken place in various forms and formats. With this edition of the 12 hole ‘made for TV’ best-ball match played under lights with the proceeds going to Hurricane Ian relief efforts.

Previous formats have included head to head with Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson when it all started in 2018 with a celebrity element being included with the likes of. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Seth Curry, Charles Barkley, Aaron Rodgers, Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and more participating.

Tiger Woods withdrew from playing in the recent Hero Cup he hosts due to a foot injury. While his last competitive tournament was The Open at St Andrews where he missed the cut.

All four players in The Match are permitted to use golf carts in the event. Woods commented, ‘I can hit golf balls. It's just hard getting from point A to point B so (carting) will certainly help a lot.’

Woods is also planning to compete in next week’s PNC Championship at Orlando alongside his son Charlie.
