Team USA get over the line against Rest of the World in two-day ICONS golf series
Dubai: In a star-studded affair, Team USA secured a victory over Team Rest of the World in the 2022 Icons Series golf tournament at the Liberty National Golf Club in Jersey City, New Jersey on Friday.
Elite sportspersons like Harry Kane, the England football captain, just retired women's world No.1 tennis player Ash Barty, Olympic swimming legend Michael Phelps, NFL hero Ben Roethlisberger rubbed shoulders on the course over Thursday-Friday with the US team having the last laugh.
The second and deciding day was broken into separate four-ball and singles events. At the halfway point, Team USA held a six-point lead thanks to wins from the pairs of J.R. Smith/Golden Tate, Ben Roethlisberger/Michael Phelps and Robbie Gould/Andrew Whitworth.
Barty, an amateur accomplished golfer who had also tried her hand in Women's Big Bash League cricket earlier, did her part to help eat into Team USA's deficit. However, the US notched the first singles win as Roethlisberger took down Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane. That foreshadowed a dominant showing by the host squad.
