Photos: The saree has got a makeover by Indian celebrities. Find your look for this festive season!

A saree is a women's garment from the Indian subcontinent that consists of a drape varying from 4.5 to 8 meters (5 to 9 yards) in length. In the last few months, there have been many saree trends floating on the internet. We show you what’s in fashion these days.

Ruffles: Ruffle sarees are the new norm and it is the trend of the season. Here, Mira Kapoor, wife of Bollywood actor Shahid Kapoor known for his role in Kabir Singh, is seen wearing this trendy saree. In the ruffles trend, the sari is exaggerated by adding ruffles to line the border of the saree and adds volume to the outfit. Many celebrities have been seen wearing ruffled sarees for parties and occasions. While you can buy a ruffled saree, you can even add ruffles to an existing saree to keep up with this trend.

Belts and sarees: The latest trend on the internet is wearing a belt with a saree or lehenga. Here, actress and yoga guru Shilpa Shetty is wearing a saree with a belt, to hold the garment in place. In the past, The “Kamarband” was a traditional belt that was worn over a saree to hold it in place, but over the years, the style has been reinvented. Mumbai-based celebrity designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee has brought the leather belt back in fashion, and now, wearing a belt with a sari is a popular trend. On Instagram, many Indian bloggers have been spotted wearing saris and lehengas with designer belts and ties.

The Chaugoshiya saree: It is also known as the Pant-Style saree or Khada Dupatta. What do you need to wear it? According to online websites you’ll need a fitted blouse, a lose tunic, trousers and a dupatta (long scarf around 5 metres). In this picture, veteran actress Rekha, who is known for her style, is wearing a golden Chaugoshiya saree. This garment was worn by women in Hyderabad during the Mughal rule. Women styled themselves for weddings. On the left, Her Royal Highness Nizam VII, Hyderabad is seen wearing the same styled saree. Have you tried this version of the saree before?

New meets old: Indian designers have been experimenting with feathers, capes, jackets and more, incorporating elements of the West, together with the Indian saree. On the left, Aisha Ambani, daughter of Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, is wearing a modern take on the saree, by designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. Not only is the blouse different than a traditional saree, the garment is draped differently too. On the right, Bollywood actress Sonam Kapoor, known for her film Neerja, was wearing a Sabyasachi saree with a thin jacket-styled blouse. Such outfits are a success among youngsters who want to be different and stand out, but still stay traditional.

The Silk saree: This type of saree is in fashion these days. The most popular types are Banarsi and Kanjivaram sarees. In this picture Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone is seen wearing a Banarasi saree by Indian designer Sabyasachi Mukherji, who uses a lot of Banarasi silk in his designs. Banarasi sarees are woven in Banaras with gold thread, while the kanjivaram are woven with pure mulberry silk, dipped in rice water and sun-dried. This is a dressy, ethnic option to try for an event.

Bold prints: While plain, simple sarees are still the rage, bold and bright prints are this year’s trend. In this picture Indian designer Masaba Gupta (left), daughter to actress Neena Gupta (right) and former cricketer Vivian Richards, is seen in a bold-print sari from her own collection. Her mother is also seen wearing a modern sari with a halter blouse. This trend is all about making a statement. Loud colours, geometric patterns and quirky prints are what you should be looking for. This typ of design is suited for a day and evening event.

Pastel colours: This season, no matter the occasion, pastel colours are very popular among Bollywood celebrities. From nude shades to mint green, a pastel saree is a must-have in the wardrobe. In this picture Bollywood newbie and the late Sridevi’s daughter Janvi Kapoor (left) is wearing a pastel saree by designer Anita Dongre. Actress Katrina Kaif (middle) known for her film Ek tha Tiger is seen wearing a pink pastel saree by Sabyasachi Mukherji. And actress Malaika Arora Khan (right), ex-wife of Arbaaz Khan is seen in a dove grey saree.

All about the blouses: While the saree has been given a makeover, the blouses have also gone through a transformation. High-neck full sleeved blouses are very in this season. Here, actress Karishma Kapoor (center), Kareena Kapoor's sister is seen wearing a round neck blouse with sleeves till the elbows. On the right, actress Malaika Arora Khan is wearing a sleeveless V-neck blouse with her saree. Embroidered and off shoulder blouses are also popular.

Handloom saris: For Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut, known for her role in the film Queen, the saree is a staple in her wardrobe. She insists on wearing hand-loom sarees that are not only cost effective, but also support indigenous brands in India. They come in different fabrics, colours and prints. If you are looking for a simple no-fuss saree, this one wins.
