Dubai: Driving a car with the engine modified to be as loud as possible can get you into a lot of trouble, especially if you are driving in Abu Dhabi.

In a post shared on its social media channels over the weekend, Abu Dhabi Police warned motorists that drivers would be penalised under three different laws in such a situation:

1. As per Article 20 of the Traffic Law driving a vehicle that causes noise leads to a fine of Dh2,000 and 12 traffic points;

2. Article 73 on making changes to the engine of the vehicle or the chassis without a licence stipulates a fine of Dh1,000 and 12 traffic points along with impounding the vehicle for 30 days and

3. Law No. (5) of 2020 Concerning impounding vehicles in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, which states that a violation of making changes to the vehicle’s engine or chassis without a licence, would lead to it being impounded and releasing the vehicle would require the owner to pay Dh10,000 within three months.

The result? A total of Dh13,000 in fines and 12 traffic points or black points on the driver’s licence.

The authority stressed that they would not tolerate drivers who make such noises from their vehicles, by taking the necessary legal measures against them.

How loud car engines affect the community

Abu Dhabi Police warned against the disturbing behaviour of some motorists, especially some youth, to modify their car engines to create a louder noise, as it causes disturbance and can lead to reckless driving too, especially in open areas near residential neighbourhoods. The post added that such behaviour disturbs the peace of the community and causes a state of panic, stress and nervousness among other drivers, road users and residents, especially children, patients and the elderly.
