Athleisure has been doing the rounds for a long time. Remember videos of rap stars in their tracksuits mostly in shades of black, accompanied with heavy jewellery to accentuate the drama? And you thought it would remain marginalised as streetwear that would never grow to be mainstream fashion. But celebrities proved you wrong.

As fashionistas across the world posted pictures of their airport looks and paparazzi captured their school run looks, athleisure slowly but surely made its way up the style ladder, expanding the fashion horizon by proving that chic and comfort can live together happily ever after.

But the past month or so has given athleisure a whole new meaning. With millions across the world compelled to stay at home 24x7, no thanks to the coronavirus outbreak, athleisure is no longer for weekends or for that grocery run – they are now clothes that we practically live in all day long, every day.

So if you feel the need to shop for some new pieces of athleisure wear and do not know where or what to look for, here is a trend report to get you started.

Colour me bright

What was all black not so long ago became shades of grey, cement and sand, and then exploded into every possible colour in the rainbow. From hot pink and blazing red to neon green and sunset orange, athleisure has lost its gothic, dark image and has become more vibrant and youthful.

Print is pretty

Whether it is style-staple animal print or very bohemian tie and dye, print is making its presence felt in the athleisure world. If you wish to keep it sober, typography or logos in massive font size are a smart option. Pair it with a solid for some mix n match magic.

Rock in some mesh and metallic

What was only functional earlier, has now become a style statement. We’re talking about mesh. The detailing is now evident on leggings and tops, giving them an added oomph. And as far as metallic goes, the extra sheen on your leggings is a perfect pick-me-up for days when a sincere workout is the least of your priorities.

Best foot forward

As we follow the UAE’s stay-in advisories that call for avoiding going outside even for walks and jogs, investing in a new pair of running or gym shoes is a bit pointless at the moment. Instead, get a pair of easy, summer slip-ons, slides and open sneakers. Easy on the wallet too!
