HEAT-RELATED DEATHS MAY SKYROCKET WITHOUT CLIMATE ACTION: A cautionary report released recently warns of a potential 4.7-fold surge in heat-related deaths by mid-century if various governments continue to neglect global warming. The annual Lancet Countdown on Health and Climate Change report outlines a trajectory of 2.7°C (4.86°F) of global heating by 2100 unless immediate actions are taken to reduce emissions. Unprecedented in its scope, the report projects the growing risks to population health if the Paris Agreement's target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C is missed, emphasising the urgency for intervention. Highlighting the alarming trend, 2023 is anticipated to become Earth's hottest year ever recorded, continuing an eight-year streak of record warmth. MOBILISING PUBLIC ACTION: In an ambitious move aligning with the upcoming COP28 (to be hosted by the UAE from November 30 to December 12, 2023), the UAE Year of Sustainability has introduced “PopCOP”, a community-centric initiative designed for groups of 10 to 15 people. These events provide a platform for residents to actively contribute to COP28 goals by engaging in immersive activities, reflective exercises, and discussions on sustainable behaviours. Participants undergo a personal sustainability "stocktake", learning design principles and application methods to make a tangible climate impact. The unique feature involves sharing their reflections, hopes, and action plans via video messages displayed at COP28, fostering a direct connection between the public and global climate leaders. It emphasises the significance of COP28 as a launchpad for a seven-year “Action Era”, calling for a nation of “actionists” committed to transforming promises into environmental reality. FITNESS SHOULD BE A WAY OF LIFE: The overwhelming response by Dubai residents to the Dubai Fitness Challenge which is in its third week already shows that it is a huge success yet again. Year after year, more participants pledge to get active, honing their skills and trying new activities as the challenge offers them a variety of options. What is more important, however, is to keep up the momentum and make exercise and healthy eating a sustainable way of life.
