SOUTH ASIA'S LOOMING AIR CRISIS: Air pollution in South Asia is now a critical threat to life expectancy, particularly in countries like Bangladesh, India, Nepal, and Pakistan. A recent report from the University of Chicago's Energy Policy Institute (EPIC) reveals that the region's deteriorating air quality, driven by rapid industrialisation and urban growth, could reduce the lifespan of individuals by more than five years. This has led to South Asia accounting for over half of the global years lost due to pollution-related health issues. The study emphasises the urgent need for adherence to WHO guidelines on particulate pollution to potentially extend average life expectancy in the region by 2.3 years. While China's reduction in pollution serves as a hopeful example, accessible and transparent air quality data is crucial for informed decision-making and effective pollution control measures across South Asia. INDIAN BASMATI EXPORT LIMITS: The recent restrictions on Indian basmati rice exports are unlikely to impact shoppers in the UAE. The region, a major importer of Indian basmati, has ample stocks that should prevent immediate price hikes. However, smaller restaurants and caterers may need to seek alternatives as lower-priced Indian basmati might become scarcer. These businesses could turn to basmati from other sources like Pakistan. While traders are adopting a wait-and-see approach, some are already exploring options from Thailand and Pakistan. ASIAN GIANTS ARE READY TO RETURN TO ACTION: The Asia Cup cricket acts as the precursor to the World Cup and there is no better way for the teams to prepare for the October-November showpiece to be held in India. Out of the six teams, each one is capable of defeating the other, with Sri Lanka winning the Twenty20 Asia Cup title held in UAE last year. Still, all eyes will be on India and Pakistan, who could meet each other three times if they both reach the final. That speaks volumes on the talents in the subcontinent and this event should be a good learning curve for Nepal, the last in the six-team competition. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP: Sharjah’s Environment and Protected Areas Authority (EPAA) has taken a proactive step by seizing 65 Arabian Sand Skink lizards in the Al Bataeh region near Khorfakkan Road. Thriving in dry, sandy deserts at altitudes below 400 meters, this species spans the Arabian Peninsula, encompassing regions like the UAE, Oman, Saudi Arabia, and more. EPAA’s action aligns with the regulations outlined in the Executive Council of Sharjah's Resolution No. 39 of 2016, which prohibits the thoughtless hunting, harming, or killing of wildlife and the destruction of habitats crucial to various species.
