Word Search: Discover majestic mountains that were the inspiration for myths and lore

They stand tall, disappearing into the clouds, imposing and majestic… no matter which peak you visit, mountains around the world are natural wonders worth travelling for.

One of the mountains mentioned in today’s puzzle is Denali, which stands at 20,310 feet and is the tallest mountain in North America. Denali was once the centre of a longstanding debate about its name. Once known as Mount McKinley, after the 25th president of the US, its name was changed by former US President Barack Obama in 2015. Denali, the name he selected, means “the great one” in the language of the Koyukon Athabascan people, who are indigenous to the area.

Another beautiful mountain in today’s Word Search is Mount Olympus, in north-east Greece. The mountain has inspired legend and lore, and has even featured in Homer’s epic, Illiad and the Odyssey. In Greek mythology, it’s considered to be the home of the thunder deity Zeus, and other major Greek deities.

A look at the mountain gives you an idea of why it was so beloved. It rises almost straight from the Aegean Sea to a height of 9,570 feet, making it the tallest mountain in Greece and the second tallest in the Balkans. It has 52 separate peaks that are snow-capped for eight months of the year and are often hidden behind the clouds.

Lastly, Mount Elbrus, Europe’s highest peak, at 18,510 feet, makes an appearance in today’s puzzle. In the local Karachay-Balkar language, Elbrus means “resembling a thousand mountains”. This resplendent mountain, too, has strong connections with Greek mythology, despite being situated in the Caucasus Mountains of southwest Russia. According to legend, it’s where Zeus chained Prometheus as punishment for stealing fire and sharing its secret with mankind.
