Our connection with food began as something we needed to survive. Today, however, it is much more than that. Food creates connections.

In Tel Aviv, Israel, a 300,000-year-old hearth was discovered in 2010 at Qesem Cave, with evidence of ancient meals prepared for people who gathered to eat there.

One of the greatest natural catastrophes of the ancient world, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD, left several cities covered in ash. On that day, a baker put a loaf of bread into the oven, one that people were meant to break together and eat from. It was discovered nearly 2,000 years later during excavations in Herculaneum, preserved in ash.

English writer Lewis Carroll’s renowned children’s book Alice in Wonderland depicts a tea party, with friends – odd as they may be – meeting for a shared meal.

Leonardo da Vinci’s 15th-century mural painting, The Last Supper, one of the most recognisable paintings in the world, represents the scene of Jesus Christ with his apostles, dining together.

The Sikh tradition of langar (which means ‘kitchen’), serves free, hearty meals to all who enter the gurdwara, with people sitting on the floor and eating together.

Almost every festival, whether Eid, Christmas, Diwali, Thanksgiving, religious or otherwise, celebrates with food and feasting with loved ones and strangers alike.

The bonds eating together creates has a profound effect. A study published in the Journal of Consumer Psychology in January 2017 found that when people eat the same food together, they are more likely to cooperate with each other, resolve conflicts quickly, and to trust each other more.
