“For sale: Baby shoes, never worn.”

Legend has it that this famous six-word story about child loss was written by American author Ernest Hemingway.

However, spoiler alert: new research finds that the attribution to Hemingway is unsubstantiated. Still, he needs no such story to introduce him. He has plenty of (substantiated) quotable quotes, like “courage is grace under pressure” and “never mistake motion for action”.

This was an author who rose to fame in the 1920s – a great time for literature. The decade saw writers of the likes of F. Scott Fitzgerald, Gertrude Stein, T. S. Eliot, and yet, Hemingway took home the Nobel Prize for Literature "for his mastery of the art of narrative… and for the influence that he has exerted on contemporary style," according to nobelprize.org.
