I’ve heard the term ‘leaky gut’ quite often. Could you throw some light on what it is and the causes and management?

Leaky gut syndrome is a term used to describe a condition where the lining of the intestines becomes more permeable, allowing substances such as toxins, bacteria, and undigested food particles to leak into the bloodstream.

Here are some symptoms of the condition. Note: These symptoms are not exclusive to leaky gut and may overlap with other conditions:

Digestive Issues: Bloating, gas, diarrhoea, Irritable Bowel syndrome (IBS)-like symptoms. Systemic Symptoms include fatigue, joint pain, headaches, skin issues (eczema, acne).

Immune System Dysfunction: Increased susceptibility to infections, and allergies. Some of the potential causes for this condition are high intake of processed foods, excessive sugar and refined carbohydrates, gluten (for some individuals) and imbalance in gut microbes. Some medications such as nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs, antibiotics can also cause leaky gut. Chronic Stress may contribute to inflammation and affect gut health as well as gastrointestinal infections and small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

General management tips:

• Adopt an anti-inflammatory diet rich in whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and lean proteins.

• Consider elimination diets to identify potential trigger foods.

• Introduce probiotics to support a healthy balance of gut bacteria and consume prebiotic-rich foods or supplements to nourish beneficial gut bacteria.

• Supplements like zinc, glutamine, and quercetin can support gut health.

• Practice stress-reduction techniques such as meditation, yoga, or deep breathing.

• Ensure adequate hydration to support overall digestive health. Homeopathic treatment along with addressing the underlying cause works very well and recovery is faster as homeopathy addresses the issue at the root, it treats people on an individual basis and a detailed history is taken to understand the causative factors. Always seek advice from a qualified and licensed Homeopathic doctor.
