Some of the closet politicians who have defected to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), despite trashing its credentials once to gain notoriety, are famous for being famous. Giving them admission does not speak highly of the BJP’s selection process either except to increase the horses in their stable.

The likes of Kiran Bedi and Shazia Ilmi have failed to cut their teeth in mainstream politics. This latest migration is a get-out-of-jail free card from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is losing its lustre, in an attempt to invigorate their future.

The BJP is the flavour of the season, the Congress cannot offer a sustainable political outlook and its new members have discarded their once-lofty ideals in order to extend their shelf life. Sadly, these personalities never spared an opportunity to ridicule the ruling party’s credentials and publicly shame Narendra Modi and his cohorts for practising religion-based politics.

Hypocrisy and doublespeak are rampant in government. The voter is aware of this. Adopting new philosophies, ideologies and policies, which were once anathema to their values, to advance a political career is not a barometer for integrity.
