Yemen: Senior judges named in shake-up
New chiefs appointed at Supreme Judicial Council, Supreme Court
Cairo: Chief of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council Rashad Al Alimi has decreed reformation of the country’s Supreme Judicial Council, appointing senior judges.
Judge Mohssen Yehia has been named chief of the Supreme Judicial Council, Yemen’s official news agency Saba reported Thursday night.
As per the decree, Judge Ali Ahmed Nasser has been appointed chief of the Supreme Court while Prosecutor-General Qaher Mustafa has been appointed a member of the Supreme Judicial Council.
Al Alimi has issued another decree naming two deputy chiefs of the Supreme Court and four new members of the top tribunal.
The new appointments were announced two days after the UN said warring sides in Yemen agreed to extend for two more months a truce, which first went into effect in April.
Al Alimi last week conducted a minor government reshuffle appointing new ministers for defence, oil, electricity and public works.
Yemen has been gripped by a devastating war of more than seven years triggered by Al Houthi rebels who unseated the internationally recognised government and overran several areas in the country including the capital Sana’a.
