Top US official to visit Oman this week

Schenker to discuss regional security and economic cooperation

Muscat: The US Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs David Schenker will travel to Oman and Saudi Arabia this week, the State Department said in a statement.

Schenker’s trip to Oman and Saudi Arabia, beginning this week will go on till December 7. The official trip will commence in Muscat, where he will meet with the leaders to discuss regional security and economic cooperation, as well as finding a way forward on the conflict in Yemen, the statement revealed.

On December 5, Schenker will head to Saudi Arabia, “to discuss the Yemen conflict and Gulf unity, and to bolster economic partnerships”.

On November 30, Monday, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq received a phone call from US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. The two discussed developments in the region, according to the US embassy in Oman.

On the occasion of Oman’s 50th National Day celebrated on November 18, Pompeo shared his wishes through the official website of the US government recognising the enduring bilateral cooperation and the important role the Sultanate plays in promoting stability in the region. “We look forward to the further strengthening of our economic and security partnership in the years to come under your steadfast leadership.”
