COVID-19: Oman reports 2,164 new cases amid surge

Total infections soar to 58,179 as fatalities rises to 259

Cairo: Oman Monday confirmed record 2,164 further cases of the novel coronavirus in an upward curve, taking the country's overall infections to 58,179.

The newly diagnosed cases include 1,572 Omanis and 592 foreign residents, the Health Ministry said, according to the Omani news agency ONA.

The ministry also announced two more deaths from COVID-19, bringing Oman's total such fatalities to 259.

There are 146 patients in the intensive care units, it added.

The country's overall recoveries from the disease have increased by 1,159, raising the total to 37,257 day, the ministry said.

The sultanate has conducted 6,173 COVID-19 tests for the first time since the outbreak of the virus, bring the overall tests to 244,787, added the ministry in an update.

A supreme committee in charge of tackling COVID-19 last week vowed tougher penalties against violators of precautions amid an infection spike in the sultanate.
