Cairo: Bahrain has increased a fine on failing to wear face masks in public places by four times amid a spike in coronavirus numbers in the country.

Interior Minister Rashed bin Abdulla Al Khalifa decreed the mandatory wearing of protective masks in public, industrial and commercial places until further notice, Bahraini newspaper Akhbar Al Khaleej reported.

Violations of the decree will be penalised by an on-the-spot fine of BD20. Violators who refuse to pay the fine will be liable to legal action including referral to public prosecution, the report said.

Bahrain so far has reported a total of 67,701 virus cases and 233 related deaths.
