Twist in death of Kerala mother and daughter
It was thought the two committed suicide over bank loan, but suicide not blames husband
Thiruvananthapuram: The deaths of a woman and her daughter in Neyyattinkara in south Kerala who set themselves aflame on Tuesday apparently because of a commercial bank readying to attach their home, now appears otherwise.
The duo, who suffered serious burns, both lost their lives.
In a suicide note found at their home on Friday the deceased woman has blamed her husband, mother-in-law and two other relatives of the husband for the deaths.
The deceased were identified as Lekha Chandran, 40 and her daughter Vaishnavi, 19. Lekha’s husband, M. Chandran had previously worked in the Gulf, and is presently working as a carpenter.
It was initially thought that the woman and her daughter had committed suicide because the bank was about to attach their property for non-payment of a housing loan taken in 2003.
The deceased woman’s husband, M. Chandran had told media persons that his wife and daughter took the extreme step, unable to bear the pressure from the bank to repay the loan. He said he his family had taken a loan of Rs500,000 in 2003 and that after paying back Rs800,000 over many years, the bank had intimated them that they owed Rs680,000 more.
The suicide note, found stuck to one of the walls of the house, blamed Chandran, his mother Krishna and two relatives for having continuously spread canards about Lekha and Vaishali. Police have taken Chandran and his mother into custody.
