In Ahmedabad, a city in the state of Gujarat, India, an Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer allegedly harassed and assaulted his wife as her family refused to give Rs 1 crore (Dh500,000 ), an Innova car and jewellery as dowry to his family.

The wife of a senior Indian Revenue Service officer has filed a police complaint against him accusing him of harassment and assault as her family did not fulfil his dowry demands. The complainant Prerna(name changed), aged 34, is a native of Bihar and works as a manager at a nationalized bank and resides in a posh society of Ahmedabad's Shilaj neighbourhood.

In her complaint with Ahmedabad Mahila rural police, she claimed that her husband's family had been demanding Rs 1 crore, an Innova car and jewellery as dowry. She met her husband, Rahul (name changed), at a meeting which was arranged by their family members. The couple tied the knot on May 13, 2013. Prerna alleged that just before the wedding, Rahul's family raised their demands. However, her parents refused to give them anything as it is a crime.

According to a local news source, her in-laws had been harassing her after the marriage. They said, "The price of an IRS groom in the market is Rs 1 crore", and would often call her a “beggar's daughter”. They also threatened her by saying that they would send her back to the house of her parents. Amid the alleged ongoing harassment, Prerna gave birth to a baby boy. He is five years old now.
