Paying respects to 'someone who truly changed the world'

"Just landed in India and spent a beautiful afternoon paying my respects to someone who truly changed the world. 'Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.' - Mahatma Gandhi."

That was a pithy epigram from the Father of the Indian Nation which Jeff Bezos, the world's richest man, quoted and posted on his Twitter handle after landing in India on Tuesday.

In the video, Bezos was seen wearing Indian traditional attire — white kurta and an orange half-jacket.

The billionaire founder and CEO of Amazon also posted the same clip on Instagram showing him paying respects  as he visited Mahatma Gandhi's memorial in New Delhi, as part of the first leg of his visit to India.

The tweet, sent out on at 7.04pm, drew nearly 7,000 retweets by Wednesday morning, in addition to 39,000 likes.

But it also became a magnet for some snide replies. One remark from tweep Wurmitz, states: “And pay your employees dirt floor wages.”

"You are not what you say you are," added Maryam Rizvi, in a gif video thrown into her comment. 

Diana Avila-Macia, using her @SKITTLED78 handle, stated: "My mother works for you and is an extremely hard worker. It’s disgusting she does not get paid enough to do your dirty work! Fulfillment centers Employees should get paid more!"

Bezos has kicked off a three-day India visit on Wednesday to attend a flagship event by the company.

The Amazon founder is in India for a two-day event being organised by the company for small and medium businesses.

The visit kicks off in New Delhi on Wednesday. He is expected to meet key leaders and policymakers, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

And his India visit may not be all bed of roses.

India's Competition Commission of India (CCI) is initiating an investigation into alleged competition law violations by Amazon Inc and Walmart-backed Flipkart.
