India: Man strangles minor daughter, dumps body in village pond in Punjab because she was in love with a boy

Reportedly, the 45-year-old father has been arrested, the boy will also be questioned.

Dubai: In a suspected case of honour killing, a man in the Indian state of Punjab, strangulated his minor daughter, and dumped her body in the village pond, after coming to know that she allegedly liked a boy.

Reportedly, the incident happened on the intervening night of Monday and Tuesday, in Moga district’s Churchak village.

On Tuesday morning, a villager noticed the young girl’s body floating in the pond and informed the police. When a team of cops reached the spot, the body was lying near the pond’s bank.

According to an Indian news website, the police said that the 45-year-old father, Sarwan Singh, from village Churchak, was booked and arrested for strangling his 17-year old daughter.

Sub-Inspector Jaswinder Singh, of the local police station, said: “During the probe, it came out that her father Sarwan Singh killed his daughter after he got to know that the girl was having an affair with a boy who lives near their home, in the same village. He strangled her to death, and then threw the body in the village pond. Thereafter he came home and slept… It is a suspected case of honour killing.”

He added: “The girl had cleared grade 10, and was staying home these days.”

The police official said that the father is being interrogated and a probe is on. They added that the boy will also be questioned.

According to the report, the body of the deceased was sent to the civil hospital in Moga, for an autopsy. And, a First Information Report has been registered against the accused under sections 302 (murder) and 201 (causing disappearance of evidence) of Indian Penal Code.
