Baghdad: Iraqi troops detained 43 people after deadly shootout in Baghdad involving a private security convoy, Iraqi officials and witnesses said on Tuesday.
An Iraqi girl was wounded in the shooting in Karradda, Brigadier General Qasim Ata told a news conference.
"Investigators are interrogating the detained people in an Iraqi army camp," Ata told reporters.
"Those involved in the firing will be tried according to Iraqi laws for three crimes—driving on the wrong side of the road, firing randomly and shooting a girl," he said.
Ata said the military has detained 10 Iraqis, 21 Sri Lankans, nine Nepalese, one Indian and two Fijians holding US passports.
A guard, who witnessed the shooting on Monday, said that private security guards opened fire at civilians.
"A truck was transporting Asian workers through Karrada, escorted by three vehicles. They were driving on the wrong side of the road and guards in the vehicle opened fire to disperse people," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
