Woman 'commits suicide' after failed marriage bid

Sana'a A 20-year-old woman is said to have committed suicide by consuming poison after her father set tough conditions for the man who wanted to marry her, the Al Ola Arabic daily reported on Saturday.

The woman, a resident of the Kaidana district in the province of Hajjah, fell into depression when her parents told her that she would not be getting married as her husband-to-be refused to go ahead with the wedding. However, she later realised her would-be husband backed out after her father set tough conditions for the marriage.

The paper said that the woman gave up hope of getting married because of her father's stubborn attitude as he always closed the door to anyone who wished to marry his daughters. The woman's elder sister eloped with her suitor when her father imposed tough conditions for the man, the paper added.
