Oman promotes peaceful coexistence in UN address

Cairo: Oman espouses values of tolerance, collective work and peaceful coexistence, an Omani official has told the UN.

In an address to the UN General Assembly, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi recalled that Sultan Haitham bin Tareq has promised that the country will continue the “wise policy” set by his predecessor Qaboos, the architect of modern Oman and its foreign policy for nearly five decades.

Haitham took power earlier this year following Qaboos’ death and pledged to build on his predecessor’s legacy of further developing Oman and maintaining friendly ties with all countries.

“We, in Oman, believe in principles of justice, equality, good neighbourliness and the rule of law,” Badr said in the virtual address.

“We also respect sovereignty of countries and the principle of non-interference in internal affairs of others,” he added.

The official said that Oman backs “legitimate and fair” demands of the Palestinians and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital based on related UN Security Council resolutions and a 2002 Arab initiative advocating the land-for-peace principle and a two-state solution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
