Oman: Four expats to be deported for COVID-19 offences

Cairo: An Omani court has convicted four migrant workers of violating rules in place to curb the spread of the coronavirus, according to a local media report.

The ruling was issued by a court in the governorate of Al Buraymi in north-western Oman, online newspaper Shabiba said.

The court also ordered that the four be deported from Oman after serving the jail term.

They were arrested during a ban on movement imposed to contain the spread of the highly infectious disease. The four were not immediately identified.

Name and shame

In recent weeks, Omani authorities have stepped up a crackdown on violators of the anti-virus precautions and named and shame them after court rulings.

Last month, a state supreme committee in charge of tackling COVID-19 in Oman declared that names and photos of violators of precautions against the disease will be published in the media.

Oman reimposed a night-time ban on movement that ended on October 24 in an attempt to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

The sultanate so far has registered a tally of 117,167 virus cases and 1,286 related fatalities.
