Strasbourg: Police have fired tear gas at protesters trying to reach central Strasbourg to demonstrate against a summit of 28 leaders of Nato nations.

The protesters were seeking to cross from their camp in the southern part of the city to the summit site.

The site is ringed with heavy security, and riot police held them back with tear gas in the pre-dawn clash on Saturday.

Another group of protesters already in central Strasbourg is planning a demonstration later in the day.

Anti-war and anti-capitalist protesters in Strasbourg have clashed with police in confrontations in previous days.
