Manila: Starting today ( July 16), senior citizens and people of determination (POD)/persons with disabilities (PWDs) just got a golden ticket — literally.

They can now enjoy a 50% fare discount on Metro Manila’s major train lines: LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.

No, it’s not a one-off flash sale, nor a one-day promo.

It’s a full-on rollout of fare relief, timed with the start of the 47th National Disability Week (July 17–23).

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. was on-site to lead the launch — riding the train all the way to Santolan-Annapolis MRT-3 station.

Students’ fare

After cutting costs for students back in June, the government is now doubling down (or halving fares) for two more deserving sectors.

According to President Marcos, also known as BBM, this move is all about lifting a little weight off the wallets of those who need it most.

“Our students, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and senior citizens truly need our help because their income is very limited,” the president said.

“That’s why we thought of this programme as something we can do to support our commuters who are PWDs and senior citizens.”

13 million seniors & PODs

So, who’s cashing in on this commuter kindness?

Around 13 million senior citizens and 7 million PWDs, according to official estimates.

Before this expansion, they were entitled to a 20% discount — good, but not great.

Now, with the 50% slash, it’s practically half the price, double the freedom, and triple the smiles.

That’s a serious upgrade from “budget travel” to “budget-friendly travel.”

Inclusive

The move is part of the administration's wider push to make public transport more inclusive and less expensive, especially for those with fixed incomes and mobility challenges.

Whether you’re heading to your next doctor’s appointment or just out for your weekly market stroll, train rides just got lighter in Manila — on your feet and finances.

It’s only the beginning.

The Philippines is currently building at least five more train lines underway: The 33-km Manila Subway, the 147-km North-South Commuter Railway, the MRT Line 7, the LRT-1 Cavite Extension and the MRT Line 4.

"People of Determination" is a term used in the UAE to refer to individuals with disabilities. It emphasises their capabilities and achievements, shifting the focus from limitations to their potential.
