Pakistan begins process for watershed election

Islamabad: Pakistani candidates hoping to run for a seat in parliament in the July 25 vote have started submitting their nominations.

Monday’s development ended rumours about a possible delay in the elections that emerged last week when a court barred the election committee from accepting nominations without a clause under which candidates must declare their assets.

However, Pakistan’s chief justice set aside that ruling, allowing the nomination process to move forward.

The election will be the second time in its history that Pakistan has seen a government complete its five year-term without a military coup or a political crisis leading to the disbanding of parliament.

Ali said the PML-N as a ruling party worked for the country and provided basic facilities to the backward regions of the country.

He said democratic process had strengthened further after completion of the five-year term of the PML-N government and credit went to all political parties on playing due role as per democratic norms.

He said the PML-N government during its tenure gave better policies for agriculture and enabled common people to earn their livelihood easily.
