Thiruvananthapuram: A tiger trapped in a cage set up by the Forest Department in the Krishnagiri coffee plantation in the northern Wayanad district on Monday has been released into a wildlife sanctuary.

It is the first time a tiger has been trapped in the area.

Forest department officials said that the five-year-old male tiger was released later the same day in Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary.

K.K. Sunilkumar, Wayanad wildlife warden, said that trap was laid after the animal had been spotted roaming the area for the past few days.

"The tiger killed a wild boar the other day and ate only a small portion of it. We managed to take the partially-eaten carcass into the cage, which led to the trapping," the officer said.

Dhanesh Kumar, South Wayanad Divisional Forest Officer, said: "It is very rare that tigers roam into human habitats."
