1949: 18-year-old Karan Singh becomes regent of Jammu and Kashmir after his father steps down. He will continue to head the state as Sadr-i-Riyasat and as governor until 1967.
1967: Singh resigns the governorship and becomes the youngest member of the Union Cabinet.
1973: Singh becomes Minister of Health and Family Planning after attempting to resign after an airplane crash. He continues in this position until 1977.
1979: Singh becomes Minister of Education and Culture. In mid-1980 he resigns and leaves the Congress party, sitting in the Lok Sabha as an independent.
1989: He serves as India’s ambassador to the United States until 1990.
