New Delhi: A police official says a bus carrying wedding guests has plunged into a reservoir, killing 27 people in the southern Indian state of Karnataka.

The official says at least five people swam to safety.

The bus sank into deep waters of the reservoir late on Tuesday. Local villagers and and police have recovered 27 bodies, including those of 24 women and children.

The police official says the accident occurred near Mysore, southwest of Bangalore, India's software hub. He spoke on Wednesday on condition of anonymity as he was not authorised to speak to the media.
