At least 26 Tamil Tigers killed in fresh fighting in Sri Lanka

Colombo: At least 26 Tamil Tiger rebels were killed in fresh clashes with the Sri Lankan army in the island's northern region, the military said on Tuesday.

Sri Lankan forces pushed ahead with their offensive against the rebels, bombing key rebel positions and fighting in the north.

"In confrontations on Monday, troops killed 26 LTTE terrorists and 29 were wounded," said a national security spokesman, who asked not to be identified, referring to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).

He added that six solders were also killed and another 22 were wounded in the fighting.

The Tamil Tigers were not immediately available for comment.
