23 suspected Taliban killed in Afghanistan airstrikes

Kandahar: An Afghan army general says 23 suspected Taliban fighters were killed in airstrikes and clashes in southern Afghanistan.

Gen. Sher Mohammad Zazai says the authorities recovered the bodies and their weapons after the Tuesday clash near Tirin Kot, the capital of the southern Uruzgan province.

Southern Afghanistan is the center of the Taliban-led insurgency, which has made a violent comeback in the last three years. Thousands of new US troops are pouring into the region to reverse the Taliban gains.
