UAE memories will remain precious

I have had a very good life in Dubai, the city I came to about 14 years ago with my family - but it is now time to go. I have a job offer in my home country.

Originally from Egypt, my wife and I came to the UAE. My four children were born and brought up here and we have spent the best years of our lives here.

I have visited many countries in the region, but have never come across the kind of hospitality and warmth that I find on a regular basis in the UAE.

Once, I remember that my car had stalled on the road and I needed help in starting it. Within moments, several people were actually fighting over how to help fix my car! It showed me that when one needs cooperation from people, one is bound to find it in this country.

What truly makes Dubai stand out is the fact that one never feels underestimated here. No matter where you are from, you will always find a home here.

My fondest memory is of meeting His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, after a horse-racing event, back in 1997.

I offered him a gift of flowers, and he thanked me. That simple gesture of appreciation from such an important individual moved me. It was a moment I will treasure for the rest of my life.

During my time in the UAE, I was fortunate enough to find employment with a company that comprised of people from different nationalities.

I was able to become friends with all of them and spent a wonderful time getting to know about their cultures. Most foreigners are very happy to live in the UAE, as they find it to be a safe place.

This is why people feel sad when they have to return to their homeland. I feel this sensation now, as I prepare to return to Egypt. I will miss the country and thank the UAE for helping me lead such a wonderful life.
