Troops in southern Philippines, Davao Oriental captured a highway on Saturday where communist guerrillas had set up a checkpoint. Brig. Gen. Felipe Berroya, commanding officer of the 701st Brigade, said his troops had cleared New People's Army (NPA) positions in a highway leading to Mt. Diwalwal and its surrounding villages.
"There was sporadic resistance from the NPAs but so far, the clearing operations are ongoing and we are still trying to ascertain whether there are casualties from both sides," he said.
Berroya also dismissed reports provided by the NPA that there were 10 Army soldiers killed in an ambush on Thursday in Davao Oriental.
He said they have only accounted for seven soldiers dead on their side.
