Dubai: The Road and Transport Authority (RTA) is examining the feasibility of converting fuel used in taxis and buses to biofuel, an RTA official said at the Global Economic Forum on Monday.

"Bio diesel has its issues because we're not an agricultural economy. We're currently looking at the possibility of using recycled vegetable oil from restaurants," said Amair Saleem, director of safety, risk, regulation and planning at RTA.

The company currently uses special diesel with their bus fleet, Saleem said.

This used up 10 times less diesel than than usual, he said.

As global growth continues, airlines have little choice but to push biofuels because the industry is already in danger of missing its own emissions goals
