Dubai: People with special needs have special parking areas and motorists must respect that and avoid parking in places allocated for them.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), urged motorists to act responsibly and have manners which is a characteristic of our society by giving way to people with special needs in various fields, especially in their parking areas.

Engineer Maitha Obaid Bin Udai, CEO of Traffic and Roads Agency at the RTA, said, "We can benefit from these group's energies by overcoming the barriers on their movement and access."

She said this requires taking into account ethics in dealing with them, as well as the design factors before beginning construction of a building, which should provide easy movement to these people.

Eng Maitha said these facilities and changes do not only serve people with special needs, but there are also the elderly, injured, mentally handicapped, people with neurological disabilities, pregnant women, children and people with other disabilities who are in need of these services.

It is well and good that the government encourages us not to use parking spaces for people with special needs. But, rather than just rendering lip service, the government should enforce this policy - directing the police to issue more tickets for this violation and, if needed, tow the violator's car. Two suggestions at where to start: Mall of the Emirates and the TECOM Free Zone.
