Al Ain: An Emirati man has been arrested by Al Ain Police for logging 150 traffic violations in the space of just two months. His licence has been revoked and he has been referred to court.
Police also said that the car in which the violations were committed will be impounded for two years.
Lieutenant Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Baloushi, head of the Traffic and Patrol Department in Al Ain, said a court file has been prepared against the 27-year-old suspect for the hearing.
He declined to comment on the total value of the violations registered against the driver but said the man will be banned for life from driving in the UAE.
Living dangerously
"Such drivers are dangerous not only for their own safety but also for other road users. The suspect driver has 16 speeding tickets with speeds of over 200 kph. A number of other tickets involved jumping red lights at some city intersections. There were 32 violations which acquired him black points. The total number of black points reached to 375 points," Lt Col Al Baloushi said.
He added that the charges against the arrested man also include reckless driving and endangering the safety of other people.
"The nature and the number of the violations committed by the suspect driver and the recklessness he has shown after his arrest prompted police to cancel his driving licence and seize his car, in addition to referring him to court," he said.
The driver has been warned against driving a car without a driving licence, a crime punishable with a prison term as per the law, with the possibility of the punishment being doubled whenever a violation is repeated.
Black points
A total of 32 Abu Dhabi motorists who had accumulated black points over the maximum permissible limit have successfully passed a qualifying programme to reduce black points and reclaim their revoked licences.
The programme was launched by the Abu Dhabi Police's Community Services Department.
The police intend to enroll at least 315 others for the programme aimed at promoting safe driving habits across the UAE.
