The Government of Sharjah is all set to join the e-government initiative of the UAE beginning with the transfer of all Sharjah Municipality records and documents into digital archives.

A contract for the purpose was signed between Sharjah Municipality and Pro Technology to transfer all physical, departmental data into a digital format, compatible to the nation-wide network.

The contract, which worth around Dh500,000, will convert all documents and tapes into digital format in a time-span of four to five months from the date of signing the agreement.

"Soon we will be able to enter the e-government initiative. The process will enhance public services of department for nationals as well as other residents, in a short time," said Obaid Al Thunaiji, member of the executive council and director general of town planning and survey.

The contract will start with the municipality departments, and will later start with the historic records of the entire government sector.

According to Protech, the paperless office is going to strengthen the dealing between the private sector and the government departments in terms of productivity and cooperation.

"Pro Technology in consultation with Valuevad (distributors for Kodak scanners in the Middle East), chose Kodak professional work group scanners with capture software for converting all of their documents into digital format," said Mansur Mahmud, director, sales and marketing of Protech.
