Oman to build new fishing port

Oman's Batinah region will get an economic uplift once a modern fishing jetty is constructed in the city of Saham. It is being built at a cost of 2.6 million riyals as part of the government's campaign to maximise the potential of the indgenous fishing industry Dr Ahmed bin Khalfan Al Rawahi, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, who signed the agreement on behalf of the government, said the project, to be completed in 14 months, would include two breakwaters, two berths and other allied facilities.

"The new port will cater to modern fishing boats equipped with preservation and refrigeration facilities to enable fishermen to increase their catch in the 'wilayat'."

Dr Al Rawahi said fisheries remained Oman's oldest industry and no effort was being spared to utilise its gains through modern techniques. Fishermen have already been given new tools to increase output.
