Moves to raise environmental awareness

The Sharjah Supreme Family Council has lined up a wide range of activities to celebrate the National Environment Day, being observed throughout the country this month.

The activities are geared towards women and children and are being provided by associations affiliated to the Council. These include the women's clubs, children's cultural centres throughout the emirate, and the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services.

The Sharjah Women's Club main branch will hold a lecture entitled The preservation of the environment is civilised behaviour. Dr Shubbar Al Wadae, head of the environment education section at the Environment and Protected Areas Authority will deliver the address.

Al Hamriya Women's Club will host a lecture by Sharjah Municipality on the dangerous effects of insecticides on humans. This will be followed by a lecture for children on the importance of trees for environment protection.

On Saturday, a speaker from the Department of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs in Sharjah will give a lecture on cleanliness in Islam. Al Mudam Women's Club in the Central Region will distribute environmental awareness broch-ures at schools and will run workshops and films on waste recycling for pupils.

Al Dhaid Women's Club in the Western Region will organise a drawing workshop for pupils on the environment, an open day on paper recycling, and a lecture by Dr Maysoon Al Khayyat from the University of Sharjah on the negative impact of pollutants on the environment.

The club invites children to an educational demonstration on plantation and gardening on February 14.

A similar demonstration will be conducted at Al Themeid Women's Club, in addition to a book discussion on the conservation of natural resources and a field trip to the Natural History Museum in Sharjah.

Members of Al Meleiha Women's Club will distribute environmental awareness brochures throughout the emirate and will participate in a free drawing workshop on the subject.

In the Eastern Region, the Dibba Al Hisn Women's Club has opened participation for a research contest on various environmental issues such as the marine environment and afforestation.

Cash prizes will be presented to those who provide the best research. The club also invites women and children to take part in another contest that seeks their visions of how an ideal city should look.

The Khor Fakkan Women's Club has chosen the beautiful landscape of Khor Fakkan beach to be the spot for its activities, which include a free drawing workshop and a beach clean-up campaign. It will also carry out field trips to some natural sites in the emirate.

Meanwhile, the Sharjah City for Humanitarian Services will observe National Environment Day with the City's disabled students through a tree planting campaign.

Children's cultural centres throughout the emirate will host a series of lectures for pre-teens and teens on environment protection and display some environmental mock-ups made by the children.
